Jean Simons Applonie received her bachelor's degree in Choral Music Education and master's degree in Choral Music Performance from Brigham Young University. She taught choral music for Davis and Murray School Districts and has served on the music faculty at The Waterford School. Applonie is co-founder/artistic director/conductor of Viva Voce! Women's Choir and Men's Choir in Salt Lake City. She operated a private voice studio for ten years and is an active church musician. She has been engaged in both organizing and presenting for various choral music workshops and festivals.

She is currently a music professor at BYU, and the director of the BYU Women's Chorus. In 2013 the Women's Chorus was invited, along with other BYU choirs, to sing at the 183rd Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
