Dale E. Monson graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in Music in 1975 and a master's degree in Music in 1976.

In July 2004, Monson gave a BYU Devotional address entitled Beggars, which described humanity's collective need for mercy, and our responsibility to give service as we "find the faces of need" in our lives.

Monson is considered the foremost American Scholar on 18th century composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, and is in charge of the Pergolesi Research Center, which was relocated to BYU when Monson joined the BYU Faculty. In 2009 he retired from BYU.
