Jenna Ariel Mitchell graduated from Brigham Young University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in theatre arts studies. She was included on the Winter 2011 and Fall 2012 Dean's Lists. She received a master's degree in musical theater writing from New York University in 2015. Her final thesis was a full length musical called Mormonish.

At the 2012 Student Awards Celebration for Theatre, funded by the Ray and Tye Noorda Foundation, Mitchell was awarded with the Overall Outstanding Student Scholarship. Her playwriting skills were lauded in 2012 when her play, A Second Birth, was selected as a David Mark Cohen Regional Finalist/National Semi-finalist.

In 2013, she was the dramaturg for The Cleverest Thief, a 'devised theatre' piece produced by BYU's experimental theatre. Also in 2013, Mitchell was awarded Outstanding Theatre Student Award at BYU's theatre student awards night. At the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival of 2013, Mitchell won the Harold and Mimi Steinberg National Student Playwriting Award for A Second Birth. This play was published in 2014 by Samuel French, Inc, one of the most distinguished play-publishing companies in the United States.
