Nancy D. Waters graduated from Brigham Young University in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in music education While at BYU, she studied Jazz, learning a love for scat. Waters was also a part of the jazz ensemble Synthesis, performing on the saxophone.

Waters was mentored by S. Gordon Jessop, who encouraged her to continue on despite difficult student teaching experiences. For Dr. Jessop's retirement celebration, Waters wrote a poem for her mentor expressing her gratitude for the influence he had on her education, career and life. Waters now works as Principle of John Muir Elementary in California, where she daily shares her love for music with her students.
