Melissa Lee graduated from Brigham Young University in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts Studies. She also served as the President of the Student Film Association.

In 2014, Lee was a Production Assistant for Inner Child, a film directed by Assistant Professor of Dance, Karen D. Jensen. This film depicted dancers meeting their inner children and was funded by the Laycock Center for Creative Collaboration in the Arts. The same year, she served as a script supervisor for BYU's full-length film production of Beyond.

The following year, Lee, along with fellow students Bob Bauer and Brandon Ostler, gave a presentation entitled "Political Remix in Media Education: It's like Fan-Fiction for Social Justice... In the Classroom" at the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE).
