Lucy Jane Schouten graduated magna cum laude, with university honors, from Brigham Young University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in journalism with a double minor in Middle East studies and Arabic. She was included on the Winter 2013, Winter 2012, Fall 2011, and Fall 2010 Dean's Lists.
In 2014, she was awarded an Oscarson Discovery Grant to intern with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C., where she had the opportunity to work for the American Spectator. The following year at the regional Mark of Excellence Awards for the Society of Professional Journalists, she was a finalist for In-Depth Reporting (Small) for her piece "Trouble in paradise: America's forests in crisis."
In 2016 she received an award from the Society of Professional journalists for her work on BYU's Newspaper, The Universe.
