Lance Montgomery graduated from Brigham Young University in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in music composition.

In 2009, Montgomery received funding from the George and Geraldine Swensen Watkins Endowment for Excellence in the Arts, which allowed him to perform at Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) in Fort Wayne, Indiana. There he was awarded Second Prize at the 2009 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Composer Commissioning Program. The designation came with a cash prize and a commission for a piece to be premiered at the 2010 SEAMUS Conference.

In 2011, Montgomery won a student Emmy for best music composition for the short animated film Dream Giver. In 2015, he was awarded a 2016 LDS Barlow Commission for music composition.
