Robert Cameron Smith graduated from Brigham Young University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in music dance theatre. He performed with a group of MDT students at the April 2015 Convocation.

In 2014, Smith competed in the Irene Ryan competition hosted at the Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). He continued on to the semi-finals with his partner, Kimberly Bunker. He also partnered with Kassandra Haddock Allen. The same year, he received a scholarship from KCACTF to attend intensive workshops at The Open Jar Institute.

In 2015, he played the part of Baron Danglars in the BYU production, and US premiere, of The Count of Monte Cristo. The same year, he received an Outstanding MDT Student Award from BYU's Theatre and Media Arts Department. He also performed at the BYU Showcase in the June Havoc Theatre in New York that year, and received an Oscarson Discovery Grant to finance the trip.
